Seminar 3A - Planning Campus Networking: Technology and Cost Update, A CREN Seminar at EDUCAUSE Morning Seminar Tuesday, October 26, 1999 8:30AM - 12:00PM Douglas S. Gale, Director, OARnet This seminar provides an update on planning campus networking over the next five years. The topics in this seminar include the convergence of voice, video and data, the trends in campus network technology, such as ATM, 10 base and 100 base T gigabit Ethernet, and wireless, and planning for advanced network connections and applications. This seminar will include estimates of the comparative costs of these approaches, and when they might be needed where. Seminar 5P - Engineering and Interfacing Campus Networks, A CREN Seminar at EDUCAUSE Afternoon Seminar Tuesday, October 26, 1999 1:00PM - 4:30PM Steven C. Corbato, Principal Internet Engineer, University of Washington We will explore the topic of engineering advanced campus networks from both technical and managerial perspectives. Special emphasis will be placed on defining internal campus requirements to the desktop and developing sufficient external interconnectivity to the commercial Internet, local and regional networks, and the high performance Internet2 and Next Generation Internet national backbones. Seminar 13P - Certificate Authorities and Identifying Users on Campus, A CREN Seminar at EDUCAUSE Afternoon Seminar Tuesday, October 26, 1999 1:00PM - 4:30PM Gregory A. Jackson, Associate Provost, University of Chicago, David L. Wasley, Director, Wide-Area Network Services, University of California Office of the President We introduce the practices and technologies needed to design and implement certificate authority services on campus, including the vexatious problems of identity and role, privacy, responsibility, and trust. The first part of the seminar focuses on uniquely identifying users and managing the data linked to identity, such as role and authorization. The second part of the seminar will describe the problems one campus sees as it approaches these issues, and the technologies and practices another campus is using to advance toward a well-integrated certificate authority on campus.
